All the recent rain can cause big problems for your yard. Dirt Dude Steve Smith from Southwood Nursery has advice for how to deal with all that water.

Smith said May had only a few days of sun, and that put some stress on plant roots. He said diseases are going to go through the roof in June.

It's time to spray preventative weed killers, put out slug and snail bait - and take up your mulch to help the ground dry out. Now is the time to take action while we have some sunny days in the forecast, Smith said.

Here are some of the problems people will be seeing:

  • The explosion of various diseases, lawn mushrooms, snails and slugs
  • Future infestation of insects due to all the new growth
  • Many flowers have quit blooming due to excessive cloudy days
  • Many trees, shrubs, perennials and flowers stressing because of root rot
  • Some breakage of branches due to water weight
  • Plants falling over because of the soft soil

And if you have issues, go down to Southwood Nursery, and they can answer your questions and get you the products you need, Smith said.
