A Tulsa woman pleaded guilty to child abuse by injury and child neglect in the death of her 2-year-old son.

Andrea Smith was arrested in September of 2013 after her 2-year-old son, Xavier Wade, suffered from a lacerated liver for days before he died.

Smith was originally charged with child abuse murder, child abuse by injury and child neglect. She pleaded guilty to child abuse by injury and child neglect with child abuse murder being dismissed.

Smith was sentenced, on both counts, to 30 year – 25 in jail and 5 out. The sentences will run concurrently.

In 2013, Wade's godmother said she was confused because she never knew Smith to be anything but a loving mother.

Court documents show Smith admitted that she lost her temper and punched Wade in the stomach two or three times in the days leading up to his death.

The affidavit says Smith told detectives she failed to protect her son and said, “someone should pay.” She told detectives she would turn herself in after Wade's funeral. But she didn't and was arrested six days later.

Court papers show Wade also had a possible burn on his forehead and possible bite marks on his stomach.
