Walls have started going up for new Habitat for Humanity homes here in Tulsa - on the site of the former Bowen Baptist Church.

The old, dilapidated church caught fire in 2009 and again in 2014. It was unsafe, and the congregation could not afford repairs.

The church donated the property to Tulsa's Habitat for Humanity. The nonprofit is now converting the site into seven new homes for families in need.

"This is a way to make a change,” Habitat's Jane Dunbar said. “It's neat we are doing it in spring, because we are building new homes, homes are coming up, because that's what you think of in spring. So it's kind of cool to see something old become new again."

The homes will go to families who have completed the 250 hours homeowners program. They will be given a 20-year, no-interest loan.
