Tulsa's ONEOK Field Gets New Sod, But Not For Baseball

New sod was laid down at Tulsa's ONEOK Field Tuesday, but it was not for baseball. 

Workers are using the sod to cover up the baseball diamond for Tulsa Roughneck soccer games.  News On 6 got an inside look on what it takes to turn a baseball diamond into a soccer field.

ONEOK Field is getting a little bit of a temporary makeover so the Roughnecks Soccer team can play their games on the field. 

ONEOK Field's heads groundskeeper Gary Shepherd explained the transformation from baseball to soccer.

"This is our first transformation on the field, so we're doing it for the first time, getting the kinks out, figuring out how we can get it done," said Gary Shepherd.

"We get to do it eight times this year, we're going to get several games in, as we go on through the season we'll get a couple of games in. We don't have to do it for all 15 home games, so we'll get some extra games on it occasionally."

Each roll of sod is 40 inches wide by one inch thick and will be laid down over a geotextile fabric.  Shepherd says the fabric will keep the soil from the new sod separate from the infield baseball sod.

The Roughnecks will play an exhibition game on Saturday, March 21 and begin their regular season on Saturday, March 28. Tickets for the Tulsa Roughnecks games are available on their web site.
