Candidate For Tulsa School Superintendent Withdraws

Tulsa Public Schools says Millard House II has withdrawn his application for the position of superintendent of schools. House was one of two finalists.

House, who is the chief operating officer at Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools in Charlotte, North Carolina and executive director of the nonprofit organization New Leaders, said the decision came after talking with family and colleagues.

"The timing is simply not right for me," he said in a letter to the school board.

"I am committed to making a difference in urban education and intend to continue my leadership journey more aggressively than ever. I have a strong affinity for public urban school districts and addressing the unique issues and opportunities they face."

Dr. Deborah Gist, commissioner of education for the Rhode Island Department of Education, is the other finalist in the job search.

School Board President Ruth Ann Fate thanked House for his participation in the process and wished him well in his career.

"He was a consummate professional throughout the process and we are confident he has a promising future in public education leadership ahead of him," she said.

The school board has a special meeting set for Monday, February 2, where they are expected to announce the decision for the new superintendent to replace retiring Dr. Keith Ballard.
