Locust Grove Public Schools are closed Wednesday because of the cold weather.

The arctic blast that came through Oklahoma Wednesday morning gave students in one eastern Oklahoma town a day off from classes.

The Locust Grove superintendent said the decision to call off school because of the frigid air wasn't made lightly.

Class isn't in session at Locust Groves Upper Elementary school, but there was still a lot going on.

Inside, teachers are working and volunteers are setting up for a sports banquet, but outside, the bitter cold kept students home for the day.

It feels like six degrees, and it was even colder Wednesday morning when students would have been headed to school.

The superintendent said the majority of students in the district ride the bus to school and almost all of the stops are rural.

Some students have to walk a half mile to wait for the bus.

The superintendent said letting students sit and wait for a bus in this weather would be dangerous.

The Mayes County school district posted the announcement on its website...

Due to extreme temperature conditions and wind chill factors anticipated tomorrow, Locust Grove Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, January 7, 2015. The majority of our students travel to school by bus, and as always the health and safety of our students is our number one concern. The plan as of now is to resume normal classes on Thursday.
