A Tulsa father was arrested after taking his 4-year-old son to the emergency room with severe burns. Grant Jackson IV was booked Friday night on a complaint of felony child neglect.
Police say he set his son in a bathtub with water hot enough to burn the skin from the child's lower body.
Grant told officers that his son "pooped himself," and he was trying to teach to teach the child - identified only as LW - to clean up after himself, an arrest report states.
"A boy needs to learn to wash himself," the 34-year-old man reportedly told officers.
The arrest report states that Jackson ran water for a bath at about noon and put his hand under the water for a couple of seconds before stopping up the tub. He then reportedly told the boy to sit down and wash himself. Jackson said he thought LW was crying because he was in trouble and wasn't going to get his Halloween candy, the arrest report states.
"Jackson said LW washed himself and was in the bathtub for approximately four to five minutes while he was in and out of the doorway talking to his older son that was playing Call of Duty," the arresting officer said in his report.
Records show that when the 4 year old continued to cry, Jackson got him out of the tub, said "Oh my God." He told officers he saw burns to the boy's foot and lower leg and rushed him to the hospital.
Police say, however, that Grant's cell phone records contained deleted photos of the child's injuries, "including photographs of his burned butt with no outer skin taken prior to being taken to the hospital."
Investigators tested the water in the bathroom of the family's southeast Tulsa home, according to the arrest report. They found Jackson failed to supervise and provide a safe environment for his son, also that he failed to get timely medical care and tried to minimize what were "extremely serious injuries."
No bond amount is noted on the Tulsa Jail website.
