A Missouri lawman is dead following a vehicle pursuit and foot chase in El Dorado Springs Sunday. Deputy Sheriff Matthew Chism was 25 and had been a member of the Cedar County Sheriff's Office for almost two years.
According to Jason Pace of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the shooting occurred at around 12:21 a.m. when the Cedar County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop the driver of a vehicle for a traffic violation near the intersection of U.S. Highway 54 and MO 82, KOZL reports.
The vehicle did not stop and a short pursuit was initiated. During the chase a passenger exited the vehicle at the intersection of Hickory St. and High St. and fled on foot.
Deputy Chism got out of his vehicle and chased the man on foot. The two exchanged gunfire, and Chism was critically wounded. He died a short time later at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital. The suspect died at the scene.
The driver of the car was arrested a short time later.
Chism is survived by a wife and a small child.
