Tulsa firefighters battled an early morning apartment fire at 79th and Sheridan that left several people homeless and injured two. Captain John Sawyer said a north wind blowing through the 16-unit building at the Ridgemont Apartments made the fire a little harder to put out.
The first crew got to the scene just after 5 a.m., he said, and it took about 30 minutes to get the fire under control. One resident had a burn to his foot, and a woman twisted her ankle trying to escape from the fire. Both were taken to the hospital, according the the Tulsa Fire Department captain.
"We got a dog out," Sawyer said. "We had a cat that was deceased."
Four units were burned and eight other had smoke damage, he said. There were from eight to 10 people displaced. No firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The American Red Cross will be helping the apartment dwellers who were left homeless in the fire. Sawyer said they hoped to have the power turned back on for the families who could move back in.
"The Red Cross is a big asset to us and to the occupants here and anywhere else," Captain Sawyer said.
