A north Tulsa community center is celebrating 30 years of serving Tulsa. The Community Action Resource Association, CARA, provides after-school care and hot meals to disadvantaged elementary age children.
The program is free for at risk youth and in many cases the kids come from poor homes and it bridges the gap for single parents.
The community based service begins right after school. That's when volunteers pick the children up from six area schools and bring them to the center for a hot meal.
The children are required to use this computer lab to read and do homework.
The executive director said the volunteers sit with students to make sure their work is done before they have fun. Once they are dropped off at home, the staff makes sure they've completed their homework and have a full belly.
CARA Executive Director, Lewis Bumpers said, "We have some educational programs that we get them involved in, after that, they finish their homework, educational programs, and then we get ready to take them home and when they take them home they have to take a snack, we give them a snack to take with them because sometimes they may not have anything when they get home to eat.”
After that they finish their homework, they finish their homework and we do educational programs, then we get ready to take them home and they have to take a snack because they might not have anything when they get home to eat."
The program is free and runs solely on donations.
