Students Plant In Tulsa Elementary Teaching Garden

The goal is to teach kids how important it is to eat fruits and veggies. Studies show school gardens can improve kids' attitudes about eating healthy.

At Walt Whitman Elementary on Wednesday, Tulsa's first lady helped students and staff dedicate the American Heart Association's first teaching garden in Oklahoma.

We were there as students planted all kinds of vegetables. The goal is to teach kids how important it is to eat fruits and veggies.

"They get to come to school and play in the dirt. And we're showing them that when you plant seeds, they're going to turn into beautiful vegetables... all different colors," Victoria Bartlett said.

One-third of American children are overweight or obese.

Studies show school gardens can improve kids' attitudes about eating healthy.
