City Councilor Working To Attract Grocery Retailer To North Tulsa

A Tulsa city councilor says he is working to attract a grocery chain to either build or keep the Gateway Market at the corner of Pine and Peoria open. The grocery store which opened in January 2010 is set to close this month.

Jack Henderson told community members at a monthly district forum meeting on Saturday, the owner of Gateway Market, Antonio Perez did everything he could to keep the shelves stocked at the store, but the community didn’t do its part to support the store.

He says he has written to seven different grocery chains to get them to open a store in north Tulsa. Henderson says the best plan would be for a company like Walmart to open its “Neighborhood Market” type store, but says residents still need to be involved and buy locally if they want to see a grocery store thrive in north Tulsa.

Last month, residents met several times to discuss options for the future of Gateway Market.
