A woman recorded her close encounter with a dust devil in Broken Arrow Friday.
Maria Banes and her husband, Tom, run a lawn chemical business and were returning to their shop from a job when they saw the dust devil. She told her husband to pull over so she could shoot video.
Maria recorded about 30 seconds of the dust devil spinning furiously near Lynn Lane and the Broken Arrow Expressway. She says the devil was more impressive when it began, but she couldn't get her phone camera to record immediately.
She said she's seen a lot of dust devils in her home state. "I have because I come from Texas, but nothing that big."
Dust devils are formed when the sun heats air close to the surface and it rises quickly into cooler air. It begins to rotate as it rises, sucking more air from close to the surface and spinning faster.
Most dust devils are harmless, but the big ones can be dangerous.
