Tulsa Mother Defends Boyfriend After Amber Alert

A Tulsa woman says police should never have issued an Amber Alert for her daughter one week ago. She says she told them her daughter wasn't in danger, that her boyfriend would never hurt the little girl.

Police say the girl's mother left that day because she and her boyfriend were fighting. They say two witnesses told them the boyfriend first threatened to cut his girlfriend when he caught up to her and threatened to kill the woman's 4-year-old daughter before leaving with the girl.

Ky'riana Richards is an energetic 4 year old who seems unfazed that she was the subject of an Amber Alert and city-wide hunt last week.

Her mother, Ne'kesha, now says police should've never issued that alert, because it was just a misunderstanding that got blown out of proportion. She says she certainly doesn't believe her boyfriend, Javonta Williams, should be charged with kidnapping.

She says they started dating about four months ago, not long after he got out of prison for burglary.

"He actually has a good relationship with my daughter, and she calls him daddy sometimes and he plays with her and reads to her, things like that. That's why I'm really comfortable with her being around him," Ne'kesha said.

She says they got into an argument, so she left to go cash a check and later learned, Williams left with the girl and police issued the Amber Alert. She says there was no need, because she believes Williams would never hurt her daughter.

"He said, 'if anybody tries to stop me, I'll whack this kid,'" said Sergeant John Adams, Tulsa Police Department. "And, he had a knife in his hand."

Sergeant Adams says two witnesses gave that same story. He says plenty of women claim their boyfriend wouldn't hurt their child, but then hurt or kill them, so with Ky'riana's safety their top concern, they issued the alert. Plus, he says records show Richards was scared enough of her boyfriend to call the cops on him in January and February.

"She just wants him out of jail and is willing to say anything to get him out of jail," Adams said.

Ne'kesha admits she and Williams have had some disagreements, but says their relationship is not the issue. She thinks the focus should be on what he actually did that day, which was take her daughter to his grandmother's house, then surrender after seeing his picture on TV.

"I think it should be dropped because factually, he did not kidnap her," she said.

Richards told me she hopes the charge against her boyfriend gets dropped and he gets to come home because she is four months pregnant with his baby.
