The Tulsa Drillers nearly completed a comeback against Arkansas but came up one run short, falling 3-2.
The Drillers couldn't get to Travelers righty Drew Carpenter, who gave up just one unearned run in six innings, but they still had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth. After Tyler Kuhn reached on an error and Dustin Garneau was hit by a pitch, Joey Wong hit a single to left that scored Kuhn and left men in scoring position down just a run. But Delta Cleary flew out and Jaron Shepherd grounded out to end the game and sent Tulsa farther into its midseason slump, having now lost eight in a row.
Tim Gustafson (5-7) took the loss for the Drillers (41-47), giving up just three runs, two earned, in six innings of work. Mitchell Boggs and Cole White each pitched scoreless innings to give the Drillers a chance in the ninth.
The Drillers' other run came when Tim Smalling scored from third with two outs on an error by Travelers second baseman Taylor Lindsey.
Tulsa was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
The Travelers (47-42) have won eight of their past nine games.
The Drillers continue their series against Arkansas Friday at 7:10 p.m.
