Meals on Wheels, provides nutritious meals and a friendly face to hundreds of homebound elderly and disabled people in the Tulsa area.
A couple of hundred volunteers, show up on the doorstep with a hot meal and a smile to almost 1,000 clients each day.
Every now and then, they show up with a birthday cake.
Volunteer driver Doug Ressler is picking up his Tuesday deliveries - he has seven. Volunteers like Doug will deliver 900 meals on a typical day from 14 locations like Christ the King Church around the Tulsa area.
Not far away Opal Brinson is sitting on her front porch waiting on her hot meal from Meals on Wheels.
Most clients get five hot meals and one frozen meal each week. The effect of that is to keep them in their homes where they are happiest and most comfortable.
Which brings us back to Opal Brinson on her porch with neighbor and guardian Daniel Davies. Opal is getting something special from Meals on Wheels for her 100th birthday.
Opal fell a while back and was able to crawl to the front door.
"She was laying behind that door for two days when the driver heard her screaming for help," Davies said.
He credits Meals on Wheels with saving her life.
Wishing her a very happy birthday!
