Dewey Man Charged With Killing Two Puppies With A Shotgun

A Dewey man was arrested Wednesday for shooting and killing two puppies at his home in the 100 block of South Chickasaw. 

Justin Herwig, 53, was charged the next day with two counts of animal cruelty.

According to an affidavit, a neighbor told Washington County Sheriff's deputies he heard gunshots coming from Herwig's property and then saw Herwig take two brown-colored puppies, who "appeared to be deceased" and bury them.

When questioned, Herwig admitted to the deputies that he shot the dogs with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Herwig said the puppies came from his girlfriend's mother and "had distemper and needed to be put down," according to the affidavit.

Justin Herwig is being held on $10,000 bond. His next court appearance is June 7, 2013.
