Police: In Attempted Murder, Bixby Man Reportedly Said He's Killed 21 Others

A convicted felon has been jailed for attempted murder after reportedly trying to strangle his girlfriend and apparently trying to blow up her Bixby residence on Tuesday.

Chance Zachary Clagett, 27, of Bixby is being held without bond at the Tulsa County jail on complaints of first-degree attempted murder and domestic assault and battery by strangulation.

Clagett previously served time in Alaska for his role in a 2005 plot to kill a drug informant, according to court records.

On Tuesday night, Clagett's girlfriend told Bixby police Clagett was intoxicated at her home and she was trying to get him to go to sleep. Instead, he became violent, according to an arrest report.

“She stated that he said ‘AKAZAK is asleep,'” and demanded she call him by another name, the report said. The victim told police she could not pronounce the name to Clagett’s satisfaction, so he got angry.

Clagett grabbed the woman by the hair, pulled her to the floor, held her by the throat and said if she moved, he would kill her, the document says. The woman reportedly said that Clagett then told her he has killed 21 other people and she would be the 22nd.

After Clagett released his hold on the woman, she ran out the back door to a neighbor’s house to call 911, the report said.

When officers arrived, Clagett met them at the door while holding a puppy and had a bag over his shoulder, according to the report. He also reportedly asked police several times for a lighter for his cigarette.

After Clagett was inside a patrol car, officers entered the home to find he had turned on all the natural gas appliances and there was a strong odor of natural gas inside the residence, the report says.

On March 27, Clagett was charged with domestic assault and battery against the same woman. The next day, she was granted an emergency protective order against him.

“Chance physically harmed me by slapping my face several times, pulling my hair and choking me,” she wrote in her petition.

At the woman’s request, the protective order was dismissed on April 10.

In 2005, Clagett, who was then 19-years-old and living in Alaska, conspired with three others to knock a drug informant unconscious and take her someplace else and kill her, according to police, the Alaska Digest reported in 2005.

“Clagett reportedly beat the woman severely, but she fled to a neighbor's apartment and called for help. Clagett was arrested the next day and charged with first-degree assault. The investigation widened to include others,” according to the newspaper’s archives.

Clagett faced charges of first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, attempted kidnapping and interfering with official proceedings. During trial, the prosecution dropped all charges but first-degree attempted murder, to which Clagett pleaded no contest, according to online court records.

In October 2009, while Clagett was on probation, he was pulled over in an Alaska traffic stop and sent back to jail.

“Police pulled over a green SUV driven by Chance Z. Clagett, 24, of Delta Junction, because it resembled a vehicle involved in several shootings during the summer,” the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner published in its weekly public safety report.

“During the traffic stop, Clagett, who is on probation for attempted murder, appeared ‘very nervous’ and was ‘very talkative,” according to a criminal complaint, the newspaper reported.

Officers found cocaine, a beaker and a crack pipe, as well as potting materials commonly used to grow marijuana, according to the News-Miner.

Clagett’s probation was revoked as a result of his drug arrest, and he returned to prison for 10 months in 2011.

Online Tulsa County District Court records show Clagett last week filed a petition to change his name to “Zaccariah Zamora.” His request is slated to be heard by a Tulsa County judge in June.
