Despite Tulsa's rank as the 25th most polluted city in the nation for ozone, the American Lung Association's "State of the Air 2013" report says Tulsa County has reduced its year-round particle pollution, earning a passing grade.
The report released Wednesday gave Tulsa an 'F' grade when it comes to ozone pollution, but a passing grade for particle pollution.
The American Lung Association says ozone is the most widespread air pollutant. Ozone is created by the reaction of sunlight on emissions from vehicles and other sources.
"Even though Tulsa experienced increases in unhealthy days of high ozone, the air quality is still better compared to a decade ago. But the work is not done, and we must set stronger health standards for pollutants and cleanup sources of pollution in Tulsa to protect the health of our citizens," said Sara Dreiling, Chief Executive Officer of the American Lung Association, Plains-Gulf Region.
The American Lung Association says cleaning up major air pollution sources by using cleaner gasoline and cleaner vehicle standards will drastically cut both ozone and particle pollution.
