A 30-year-old McAlester man is in the Pittsburg County jail on accusations he dealt child pornography and offered to pay for sex with girls as young as 8.
Court documents say a woman went to police on Nov. 26 after she began communicating via text with a man who was an old friend, and his text messages became disconcerting.
Brandin Kyle Cathey began texting the woman and propositioning her for sex, documents say. When she turned down his advances, he offered to pay her. The woman said she declined, so Cathey asked her if she would find girls for him to use for sex, an affidavit says.
"Brandin texted that he would be willing to go as young as eight years of age. Brandin texted to would pay more for younger girls and also texted he would pay [the woman] to find him a young girl. … Brandin's request for sex with young girls were on a daily basis. …Brandin has stated in one text message that he was willing to pay $1,000 for sex with a young girl," the affidavit says.
Cathey reportedly told the woman that he had sex with several young girls that were daughters of a friend and texted her photos of what appeared to be underage girls without clothing.
Police said the woman voluntarily agreed to let detectives retrieve all data from her cell phone as evidence.
Police set up a sting operation and asked the woman to help them catch Cathey in the act. Detectives advised the woman to tell Cathey she had a friend with a 13-year-old daughter with whom he could have sex. She then gave Cathey a phone number to text the girl's mother, which was actually undercover law enforcement.
Within 10 minutes of obtaining the phone number on Nov. 29, Cathey texted undercover officers asking to have sex with the girl, documents say.
"The price of $1,000 was agreed upon but Brandin asked what he was able to do for $1,000… Brandin stated that he would be willing to pay $400 more" for sex without a condom, an officer wrote in an affidavit.
On Dec. 2, the officer set up a meeting time for the next day in a local motel room, but Cathey didn't show. He later texted the officer requesting pictures of the girl because "others usually send pictures to make the deal."
To encourage the undercover officer to send nude pictures of ‘Cheyenne,' Cathey texted multiple pornographic images of young girls, according to the affidavit.
Documents say the woman who came forward to police continued to correspond with Cathey in hopes of helping authorities.
According to the affidavit, the woman staged a meeting with Cathey on Dec. 5 and informed officers. She texted Cathey and told him she would be watching a young girl for a friend. Cathey reportedly turned the conversation sexual and asked about the possibility of having sex with the girl. The woman told Cathey to meet her in the parking lot of a restaurant.
Officers observed a car pull up at the restaurant and wait about 15 minutes before leaving. Officers later followed the car and observed Cathey going inside a store and then on to his residence, the affidavit says.
Cathey was charged on Tuesday with three felonies: Preparing, distributing and exhibiting obscene material; procuring, producing, distributing and possessing juvenile pornography; and soliciting sexual conduct or communication with a minor by use of technology.
On Saturday, Cathey was still behind bars on a $250,000 bond.
If convicted, he could receive up to 10 years in state prison on the first count, up to 20 years on the second and up to 10 years on the third.
