Green Country Students Vote In Mock Elections

About 250 students at Union Public Schools' Boevers Elementary cast their own ballots, in a mock election.

Each student got a sample ballot ahead of time, so their teachers could explain how it works.

"I think they've seen a lot of campaign ads, and heard their parents visiting and talking. They're anxious, and they were excited to be voting today," said Principal Alycia Pennington.

President Obama won that race with 82 percent of the vote.

Elsewhere in the state, 61 students at Osage School, west of Pryor, participated in their own mock election Tuesday morning.

Osage School teacher Sheri Ray says the school made it as realistic as possible with sign-in sheets, ID cards, voting booths and ballots.

Several 8th graders were appointed as election officials who checked IDs, handed out ballots and oversaw the voting booths.

In the final tally, Republican Mitt Romney won with 34 votes with President Barack Obama recording 27 votes. Students in 5th through 8th grades participated.
