The Tulsa sporting world - and economy - has scored an international event. Tulsa will host the 2014 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships at the Convention Center.
The championships are expected to draw more than 100 teams and 1,200 athletes from around the world. Competitors will be ages 13 to 19, according to the Tulsa Sports Commission.
In a news briefing Monday, organizers estimate that the tournament will have a $3.5 million impact on the local economy.
The Convention Center will turn into an international performance arena with 15 courts, both indoor and outdoor. Athletes from the U.S., Chile, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Peru, Canada, New Zealand and Mexico are expected to attend.
Matches are best-of-five sets with most teams playing eight matches during the event.
The USA Volleyball High Performance Championships will be held July 22-26 in Tulsa, and the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championships to be held in Oklahoma City in mid-December.
