The Tulsa Drillers made it three straight wins Saturday, topping the Springfield Cardinals 3-2, thanks to a strong pitching outing from Edwar Cabrera and the bat of Kent Matthews.
Cabrera (3-1) was stellar from the mound for the Drillers, pitching seven complete innings, giving up just two hits and striking out seven in the process. John Gart (3-2) picked up a loss for the outing, giving up three earned runs on five hits in five innings.
All three runs came off of the bat if Kent Matthews, who sent two balls out of the yard in the contest. The first came in the bottom of the second with a runner on base, the second a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth.
Springfield responded in the top of the eighth, hanging two on the board to pushing Tulsa late.
Jeff Schaffer doubled in the second at-bat of the inning and advanced to third thanks to a single in the next at-bat. The next batter was forced out at second, allowing Schaffer to come home from third and cut the lead to 3-1.
Two at-bats later Kyle Conly singled to center field, bringing Kolten Wong home to cut the lead to just one run.
However, Coty Woods came in to close the game out, striking out two of the four batters he faced, forcing a third into a fly out to end the game.
The Drillers will try to make it four consecutive, including three over the Cardinals, at 2:05 p.m. Sunday.
