Many Oklahomans are under water on their mortgages, meaning they owe more money on the home than it is worth.
The Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League is a non-profit offering free training and mortgage assistance for people who may be in this situation or who want to avoid it when purchasing their first home.
The non-profit has seen an increase in clients with home mortgage-related problems.
On the third Saturday of each month the Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League holds a free first-time homebuyer training course.
The next class is Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the Urban League office at 240 East Apache. To enroll or to get more information about the program call 918-584-0001.
The Urban League also has a mortgage assistance program. Qualifying clients could receive up to $5,000 toward a down payment on their home.
There are restrictions though. The client must not have purchased a home within the last three years. The home cannot cost more than $200,000 and must be in the Tulsa city limits. And the client must be willing to invest at least $1,000 toward the home.
