A Broken Arrow second grader is helping others one step at a time. Sylas Miguel set a goal to raise $5,000 at this year's Jump Rope for Heart event at Park Lane Elementary.
Jump Rope for Heart not only encourages kids to stay active but raises money for heart research.
Sylas knows what living with a heart condition is like. He was born with a hole in his heart. While he hasn't let it stop him, he has had to learn limitations and know when he's pushing too hard.
"My skin feels real hot and I start sweating a lot," Sylas said.
Last year, Sylas was the top jumper at Park Lane Elementary. Now his goal is to raise $5,000 in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart program.
"Sylas is a hero," said Brandy Miller, event coordinator. "He's setting a great example for everyone at his school to stay active."
His condition is called atrial septal detect. It allows blood that is not oxygenated to be sent out to the body which can make his fingers, toes and lips turn blue.
He may need a surgical procedure to patch the hole. In the meantime, he can still play sports but has to sit out during games to rest.
