Tulsa Library Presents Genealogy Workshop

Researching your family tree? The Tulsa City-County Library would like to show you a new tool that helps genealogists make those family connections.

The library will present a "Locating Family on the 1940 Census" workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. February 16 at the Genealogy Center, 2901 S. Harvard.

Manager Kathy Huber will demonstrate how to best use the 1940 U.S. Federal Census. The census will be released April 2, after the 72-year privacy restriction is lifted.

"The census is one of the best sources of information to a genealogist," said Huber.

"The census started in 1790 and was taken every 10 years after that. Each census has different types of questions so you end up with all kinds of information on your families."

One change should make research easier - and cheaper.

"The big news is that the National Archives is digitizing the whole census and making it available on its website for free. Now, all previous census information is available through a subscription site," said Huber.

"This way, everyone will be able to see the 1940 information for free."
