The Tulsa Golden Hurricane avoided a three-game losing streak Sunday thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Chanice Scott to come away with a 42-39 win over SMU on the road.
The Golden Hurricane jumped out to a big lead early, scoring the first nine points of the game and led 12-2 at the 10-minute mark of the first half. However, the Mustangs battled back, outscoring TU 12-7 over the final stretch of the first half – including six from Christine Elliott – to head into halftime trailing by just seven.
SMU's hot streak continued into the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the second half to take a 25-19 advantage, the Mustangs' first of the game, less than four minutes into the second half. However, TU snapped off nine consecutive over the next three minutes to take a 28-25 lead.
The teams essentially traded buckets over the next 12 minutes, setting up Scott's last-second heroics for the win.
Scott led the charge for the Golden Hurricane in the win, scoring 13 points, grabbing five boards and blocking three shots, but was the only TU player to score more than six points.
Akil Smith set the pace for SMU turning in a double-double, scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Elliott contributed 11 points and nine boards in the loss.
Tulsa will take four days off before trying to win their second consecutive game, taking on the Central Florida Knights at 6 p.m. Thursday.
