According to the Alzheimer's Association, almost 5.5 million people are living with the progressive brain deterioration disease. Many Americans dismiss the warning signs of Alzheimer's, thinking the symptoms are part of aging.
Community leaders are teaming up to raise awareness of Alzheimer's Disease through an event called "Out of Africa - Healthy Brain Strategies."
The event uses education and entertainment to raise awareness of the disease among African Americans – and give strategies to lower the chances of ever getting the disease.
"Out of Africa" will be held Friday, February 10 at the Greenwood Cultural Center, 322 North Greenwood Avenue.
It starts with a light reception at 6 p.m. Participants can visit vendors from across the city and state before 7:30 p.m. when the program begins.
This year's theme is "This Is My Story." Entry is $15. For more information, call 918-596-1020.
