TULSA, Oklahoma – The University of Tulsa football team will honor the events of September 11, 2001, during their game Saturday by wearing special helmets.
The Golden Hurricane will sport gold helmets with decals on each side that read "Tulsa," but instead of the normal blue lettering, the letters are a special patriotic design that is printed with the American flag.
The idea came from Tulsa's equipment manager Russ Hoffman.
TU is on the road Saturday and will face Tulane in its first conference game of the year.
Although the game is one day before the actual anniversary of the tragic events that occurred on 9/11, the team's gesture is one of the many special tributes planned by teams across the nation for the 10th Anniversary of the attacks.
Tulane has also named Saturday's game First Responders Appreciation Day.
The university invited local fire, police and government first responders to send representatives to the game who will take the field before the game and be honored for their service.
Tulsa and Tulane will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
