MIDWEST CITY, Okla. – The Carl Albert girls’ basketball team overcame a slow start to beat Putnam City 51-43 in the Titans’ host tournament Friday.
PCO’s LaShawn Jones dominated the first quarter and nearly outscored the entire Carl Albert team. She scored eight points in the period to lead the Pirates to a 13-9 lead.
The teams fought back and forth through the second quarter until the Titans retook the lead 23-22. They did not trail for the rest of the game.
Carl Albert gradually built on its lead through the third quarter and led by 11 going into the final frame. Putnam City used a 9-2 run to cut the lead to four, but with four minutes left the Titans began to milk the clock.
On their final few possessions, the Titans did not even look for shots. They drew defenders to the ball and passed to open teammates, draining more than a minute off the clock on every possession. Eventually PCO was forced to foul, and Carl Albert made its free throws to seal the win.
Jones carried Putnam City’s scoring all day and finished with a game-high 21 points. But her performance was not enough to overcome Carl Albert’s double-headed attack of Gioya Carter and Alicia Frazier, who led the team with 15 points each.
Carl Albert will advance to the semifinals of the Titan Classic, where it will face Del City at 7:00 p.m. Saturday. PCO will drop into the consolation bracket and play Mustang at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
