Jenks Lady Trojans Take Tournament of Champions Title

JENKS, Okla. -- The Tournament of Champions features some of Oklahoma’s best high school basketball teams, and this year was no exception on the girls’ side. Originally scheduled to be in the McAlester Expo Center, it was moved at the last minute to the campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.

The first round started Thursday with the 6A’s No. 13 Jenks Lady Trojans crushing the Sasakwa Lady Vikings 54-16 and 3A No. 8 Henryetta thwarted a late rally attempt by 4A No. 19 Broken Bow as the Lady Knights defeated the Lady Savages 62-57.

The Lady Eagles of Del City, ranked No. 4 in Class 6A, sailed by Wilburton’s Lady Diggers 52-21, and the 2A No. 5 Savanna Lady Bulldogs downed Class A’s No. 13 Stonewall Lady Longhorns 67-38.

In loser’s bracket play Friday, Broken Bow recovered to down Sasakwa 41-30, while the Wilburton/Stonewall contest was a close one. Stonewall edged out a 38-37 victory.

The 6A schools intimidated their opponents as Jenks dominated the first half of its game against Henryetta, which allowed the Trojans to take a 62-47 win, while Del City beat Savanna 57-50.

Wilburton won against Sasakwa for seventh place Saturday, Broken Bow got by Stonewall 48-30 in the fifth place contest, Savanna downed Henryetta 70-55 to take third place and No. 13 knocked off No. 4 as Jenks defeated Del City 57-40.

Wrap-up of the way the tournament shook out was as follows: Jenks took first place, followed by Del City, third went to Savanna, Henryetta came fourth, Broken Bow earned fifth, Stonewall finished sixth, Wilburton was seventh and Sasakwa eighth.
