TULSA, Oklahoma – The Victory Christian Conquerors (1-0) snapped a 14-game losing streak after beating the Webster Warriors (0-1) 37-26 on opening night. Victory picked up its first win since October 2008.
Neither team had success through the air, but both did a lot of damage rushing the football. Webster finished with 308 yards on the ground, including a 76-yard touchdown run in the second quarter by quarterback Mariano Dilliard. The Conquerors racked up 232 yards on the ground.
Victory Christian struck first with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Matt Tedescucci to Andre Wiley. They followed up that score with the first of their five interceptions on the night.
Webster responded with two quick touchdowns to take a 12-7 lead in the second quarter. The Warriors weren’t able to hold on to the lead because of sloppy quarterback play. They finished 4-for-15 for just 69 yards through the air.
Both teams played sloppy football. The two lost a combined 237 yards on 21 penalties.
The Conquerors finished with 130 yards on 11-for-16 passing.
Victory went victory-less in 2009, finishing 0-9. They beat Blackwell 29-8 on October 3rd two seasons ago. That was the last time Brent Marley’s team walked off the field winners.
Webster lost another season opener. The seniors on the team have never won the first game of the season in their careers. Webster finished 2-7 a season ago.
Webster will play its first home game of the season when it hosts Rogers in Week 2. Victory Christian will visit Holland Hall (2-0).
