TULSA, Oklahoma – The Cascia Hall Commandos know that being the best means people look up to you. For the past two years, all of 3A has bowed down to the back-to-back champs. They even won a 2A title in 2007.

Cascia also knows, when you’re the top dog, teams are gunning for you.

The team won’t have an easy first test when Holland Hall comes to visit in Week 1. The Commandos and Dutch don’t particularly care for one another, either.

“Holland Hall’s always been a rival of ours since I’ve been in sixth grade. I guess even before that,” said Cascia starting quarterback Timmy Curthoys. “They’re a pretty big rival of ours. It’ll be a pretty big game.”

A Cascia Hall win would give them 41 straight victories, tying them with Ada for the Oklahoma 11-man football state record. Ada accomplished the feat from 1993-96.

Needless to say, this game has more ‘oomph’ than usual.

Players on both sides are familiar with each other. Not only have they grown up playing against each other, some of them used to be teammates.

“I’ve got a lot of friends at Holland Hall,” said Curthoys. “We’re all a bunch of buddies. We’ve got some guys that used to go to Cascia over there now that are good friends of mine.”

The Commandos won the season opener 21-0 a year ago. Cascia has outscored Holland Hall 94-40 in the past five meetings and has shutout the Dutch three times.

The fact that history is on the line for the team that has dominated the series, raises the ante on the first Friday night of the fall.

“It’ll be a big game for bragging rights,” smiled Curthoys.

The Dutch just want to win. Holland Hall hasn’t beaten Cascia since 2005 and no doubt would like to be “the team” to snap the Commandos’ impressive streak.

We preview the titanic Week 1 matchup between two of Tulsa’s most prestigious private schools.
