BIXBY, Oklahoma -- DeWitt Jennings has yet to step on the field at Tulsa and he is already causing problems.
“(The coaches) watched my highlight reel and they were arguing about which position I should play, defense or offense,” Jennings said. “I’m on defense right now and I can’t wait to start working out with them.”
After looking at the numbers, it’s easy to see why TU coaches are fighting over the former Spartan standout. Rivals.com ranks Jennings as a three-star athlete at the safety position, but he combined to rush for over 2200 yards on the ground the past two years. While Jennings expects to play defense, he plans on making a difference wherever possible.
“Last year was kind of rough for them and they lost a couple of close games, but I’m guaranteeing to make a change to that this year,” Jennings said.
Bixby experienced success with Jennings on the team. The Spartans were state runner-up in 2007 and 2009 and made it to the second round of the playoffs in 2008. The 6-foot-0, 200-pounder will also have the assistance of several area standouts.
“I know (Tulsa) is headed in the right direction. We have like six people coming from around here and a whole bunch of friends,” Jennings said. “I grew up with a bunch of them. I played football with them in the eighth grade when I went to Union.”
Jennings said his friendship with other signees and the proximity to his home helped solidify his decision.
“I just knew that it was the place for me whenever they first offered me because they've been interested in me for awhile,” Jennings said. “I thought about (Oklahoma State) for awhile because my cousin went there and they have a good facility there, but TU is where my heart is right now and that’s where I’m going to be at.”
While he will be close to home and his support group, Jennings knows the transition to college football won’t be completely seemless.
“It’s going to be weird leaving my brothers for the first time, but it’s going to be a real exciting experience.”
