Kale Sawatzky will follow in the footsteps of his uncle, Mike, and suit up for the Oklahoma Sooners. However, Kale’s arrival will not garner as much fanfare as other recruits. Instead of accepting scholarship offers from UCO and SWOSU, Sawatzky will walk-on at OU. Even though he is not a full-ride recruit, Sawatzky is still excited for the opportunity.
“It’s going to be great,” Sawatzky said. “I’m pumped about telling everybody.”
While Sawatzky’s highlight reel may be impressive, it did not attract the attention of any D-I programs. The Weatherford fullback and linebacker is listed at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, but that was not big enough for the big time programs.
“They told me I was too small weight-wise,” Sawatzky said. “If I was 15 pounds heavier I would have had scholarships from a lot of schools. I guess 200 pounds just wasn’t enough.”
Mike Sawatzky played offensive line for the Sooners during the Barry Switzer era. Kale might be under more pressure than most walk-ons, however, he is looking forward to forging his own path.
“I’ll gain my weight. I can’t wait for the chance to prove myself,” Sawatzky said.
Kale will suit up at linebacker for the Sooners.
