OKLAHOMA CITY – The Bishop McGuinness Fighting Irish won the first game in their host tournament Wednesday, defeating defending tournament champion Guthrie 65-51.

Guthrie (4-3) – ranked No. 9 in Class 5A – played without star Kentrell Brothers, who was taking part in a football combine in San Antonio. Without Brothers, the Blue Jays’ offense could not keep up with McGuinness.

The Irish (10-3) continued their strong start to the season, and are currently ranked No. 3 in Class 4A. They will now move on to play in the second round of the McGuinness Classic against Deer Creek, which needed a last-second shot in overtime to win 70-69 over Northwest Classen Wednesday.
