STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Tonkawa Buccaneers won the Class A state championship 7-6 Saturday thanks to multiple costly mistakes by the Stroud Tigers.

With the game scoreless in the first quarter, Stroud mounted a long and sustained drive and was in position to take an early lead. But running back Cody Pritchard fumbled and Tonkawa’s Kramer Simpson recovered inside the 15-yard line.

The game stayed scoreless until the second quarter, when Tonkawa running back Jake Love broke a huge 94-yard run for a touchdown to give the Bucs a 7-0 lead.

Stroud responded with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Miller to Dakota Biswell, but that led to the Tigers’ second major mistake of the game. The kicker missed the ensuing extra point, allowing Tonkawa to hold on to a one-point lead.

Tonkawa forced another turnover in the third quarter, intercepting Miller near midfield. The Buccaneers’ defense stepped up for the rest of the game and did not allow Stroud an opportunity to take the lead.

The win gives Tonkawa its sixth state championship and clinches its second 15-0 record in school history and spoils Stroud’s attempt to win its first Gold Ball.
