TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa firefighters had to rescue a couple and their 2-year-old child Friday afternoon after the family became stranded in the middle of the Arkansas River just south of the pedestrian bridge.

Tulsa Fire officials say the couple had apparently been fishing on a sand bar when water in the river started to rise.

Police say the couple was wading through waist high water with the child, attempting to leave the sand bar.

Firefighters had put a banana boat into the water to bring the family safely to the river bank.

EMSA treated the child for dehydration but no serious injuries were reported.

Police say a member of the Department of Human Services was called to the scene to investigate if the child was in danger.
