None of our state’s four Division One men’s teams are going to the Big Dance, but a former state star is.
Former OSU All Big 8 guard Brooks Thompson has guided the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners to the NCAA tournament in his fifth season as head coach.
UTSA was the number 7 seed in the Southland Conference tournament, so their championship was a bit of a surprise.
Thompson nearly got the Roadrunners to the NCAA tournament in 2009 when they lost in the conference tournament finals.
UTSA lost at both OSU and Tulsa this season, falling by 16 in Stillwater and by 25 at the Reynolds Center.
Thompson’s playing and coaching pedigree will quickly make him a hot coaching candidate. He played for and coached under Eddie Sutton at OSU and also has ties to Bill Self. He also spent 5 seasons playing in the NBA.
Now that Thompson has proven he can guide a program to the NCAA Tournament, bigger schools are likely to come calling.
