It wasn’t pretty Sooner fans, but would you rather be the Longhorns?
THE GOOD
Landry Jones. Sure, he made some mistakes and threw one interception, but he also made some big throws on third down in the first half to keep a couple of drives alive. Remember, he’s just a sophomore. When he can make a few mistakes and still win, it’s a blessing.
Jonathan Nelson and Pryce Macon. The Sooner secondary was beaten deep several times, but Nelson made two huge plays on defense that kept the Bearcats from putting points on the board. And Macon stripped UC quarterback Zach Collaros of the football with the Sooners clinging to a 2-point lead and the Bearcats with the ball in OU territory in the 4th.
1-0 on the road. OU was 2-5 away from Owen Field last season.

THE BAD
The running game. 1.9 yards per carry?! Now, the Bearcats were not bad against the run going into the game. They were 31st in the country going into the game and allowing opponents right at 100 yards per game. The Sooners with DeMarco Murray netted only 82.
The Defense. The secondary was beaten deep on several occasions. A guy named Isiah Pead rushed for 169 yards. The Sooners managed 3 sacks against a team that had averaged being sacked 5 times per game.
The Penalties. 13 for 113 yards. That included an unsportsmanlike conduct against wide receivers coach Jay Norvelle. Now, the officials missed a no-doubt late hit against the Bearcats on OU’s Trey Franks. Most of us would have come unglued at seeing that happen to our player as well. But unsportsmanlike against a coach is a no-no.
I know that a couple of the wins have felt like losses this season, but they’re not. It’s a 13-week playoff to win a national title and the Sooners are moving on.

May 26th, 2011
