CLEARWATER, Florida -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys swept a double-header Friday, topping Kent State 8-0 in the early game and FAU 8-2 in the nightcap.
In the first game, Kat Espinosa (11-2) pitched a gem from the circle, keeping the Golden Flashes’ offense off the board. The sophomore from Houston pitched a six-inning complete-game, shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out eight of the 19 batters she faced.
Conversely, Markie Pozzuto (1-2) was knocked early, allowing two earned runs on one hit and walked four batters in her 1.2 innings pitched.
Maria Gerhart and Sammy Jo Diffendaffer led the charge offensively for OSU, Gerhart batting in three runs and Diffendaffer driving in two with a two-run home run.
The second game was equally as one-sided, but took a combined pitching effort from Morgan Hawkins (3-0) and Sara Odom in the win. Hawkins was credited with the win after pitching the game’s first four innings, giving up just one earned run on four hits and striking out 11.
Chelsea Garcia did the damage for OSU, going 1-of-4, driving in three runs, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to put the Cowgirls on top 4-1.
Oklahoma State continues the USF: The Game Tournament at 11:30 a.m. Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast.
