STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Oklahoma State basketball team escaped an early-season scare with a 68-58 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday.

The two teams stayed close for most of the night, and the lead changed hands several times in the first half. The Cowboys (2-0) used a late first-half surge to go into halftime up 30-26, but Corpus Christi (1-2) continued to fight back.

The Islanders hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and draw within one point, and continued to answer OSU scores for much of the night. Corpus Christi tied the score 42-42, but the Cowboys responded with a 9-2 run and led the rest of the way.

Oklahoma State suffered through cold shooting during parts of the night, and finished 26-of-62 from the field and 2-of-8 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, the Islanders stayed in the game thanks to seven 3-pointers and 17 made free throws.

Ray Penn led the Cowboys off the bench, scoring 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and making the team’s only two 3-pointers. He tied Marshall Moses for the team lead in points, and Moses also pulled down nine rebounds.

Terrence Jones led Corpus Christi with 18 points and made five 3-pointers. No other Islander scored in double figures.

The Cowboys will continue their home stand against Nicholls State at 3 p.m. Sunday before traveling to Anaheim, California to take part in the 76 Classic.
