NEW YORK -- Embattled former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryrant was selected No. 24 by the Dallas Cowboys, despite what many experts have called character questions.
In 2009, Bryant’s season ended after only three games after questions of an NCAA violation involving Deion Sanders and his longtime agent Eugene Parker. Bryant admitted to lying to the NCAA about a trip to Sanders’ home – which itself is not a violation – but lying about the visit cost him his junior season.
Before his suspension, Bryant played in three games, catching 17 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns. In his only full season as a starter in 2008, Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns, averaging out to 113.8 yards per game and 17 yards per catch.
Bryant was unable to work out at the NFL Combine due to a hamstring injury and pushed back his own personal pro day that he held in his hometown of Plano, Texas. Once Bryant did workout for NFL scouts, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds and dropped passes in the position drills.
According to reports, some of Bryant’s troubles at his pro day stem from the fact that he forgot his cleats and had to work out in a pair of sneakers that were not broken in.
Dallas decided to select the hometown boy and add another weapon to their arsenal, and traded up to get him. The Cowboys were one of the most potent passing offenses in 2009, passing for 280.2 yards finishing eighth in the league. This addition will keep defenses from keying on Miles Austin, who accumulated 1,320 yards in 2009.
