Tornado Causes Damage Near Grove, Cleora

GROVE, Oklahoma -- A tornado - or possibly tornadoes - touched down at Grand Lake Sunday, knocking out power lines, uprooting trees and causing damage to a few homes in the area.

U.S. Highway 59 was shut down at Highway 127 north of Jay due to downed power lines and a natural gas leak. There are many reports of downed power lines but so far no reports of injuries.

Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative said the storm has caused significant outages to Grove, Cleora, Colcord, Turkey Ford and White Water substations.

Almost 9,500 people were without power at 9 p.m., about 25 percent of the cooperative's membership. They have called in all crews to assess the damage and proceed with repairs.

Members are advised to watch out for and stay clear of downed power lines. Call 1-800-256-6405 to report an outage.

News On 6 Reporter Lacie Lowry was in Cleora at the time of the storm and had to take cover as strong winds broke out glass.

The Red Cross in Tulsa has set up a shelter at the Jay Community Center at 429 South 9th Street.

Red Cross has sent damage assessment teams to the Grove area to assist with determining the scope of damage and will provide additional response resources as needed. 

Officials say they continue to work with area emergency management and emergency responders throughout the area to determine damage and will respond accordingly to the need.
