MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma -- Some Green Country school children are about to get a really special gift.
On Tuesday, the Oklahoma City-based charity Feed The Children donated 960 backpacks to the Muskogee school district. The packs are full of school supplies, books, personal care items, and ready-to-eat meals.
Organizers say the backpack helps feed young minds as well as bodies.
"For kids who have so little to have something that's theirs, books that they can put their name in, something that is something they can carry all of their possessions in, that's their own little safe space, it's hugely important," said Erin Carlstrom, with Feed the Children.
Carlstrom says the backpacks mean so much to some kids, they actually sleep with them. Students will get one of their own in the near future.
