JENKS, Oklahoma -- Some Jenks students got connected with their past Thursday.

They're taking part in the Ellis Island Project. Each middle school student had to do a lot of research leading up to Thursday. They chose a country and then became an immigrant from that country learning all sorts of things, including why people were leaving for America and what their trip was like.

"It's a really fun project to do because I think it taught everyone a lot about the hardships that people went through just to get into America," said student Tommy Thompson.

Some students got so into their immigrant character they dressed in period clothes.
