Constitution Day Finds Central High Students Debating New Laws Merits

TULSA, OK---223 years ago, 39 brave men signed the U.S. Constitution. Today students at Tulsa's Central High School celebrated Constitution Day by debating the merits of a new law being passed which targets young drivers using their cell phones.

'23% more teenagers die texting and driving than under the influence and driving,' said Central High Freshman Michlyn Owens, 'so they're trying to pass that law and that law will be passed November 1, 2010.'

While the students all agreed the law would save lives, many were concerned that the law unconstitutionally targets just one segment of society...youth.

'Here at Central we're celebrating it by bringing a judge into our class' said Christen McDermott, Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, 'and she talked with us and our students about the cell phone use while driving law and we were discussing whether it was constitutional, if it infringed on their rights or if it was for the safety of the community.'
