UNDATED -- Oklahoma Congressman John Sullivan called U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder's decision to file a lawsuit against Arizona over its immigration policy "severely misguided."
"Not only has the Federal Government failed the American people by refusing to secure our borders, but now the Department of Justice is actively trying to stop states from taking action to protect their own citizens – that is just outrageous," Sullivan said in a statement Tuesday. "The simple fact is that Arizona took action for one reason, because the Federal Government would not. Arizona, just like every other state, has the right to protect their citizens and communities –individual states wouldn't need to pass their own laws if the Federal Government would simply do its job and enforce the laws we already have on the books."
The federal government filed the lawsuit Tuesday, saying the new law targeting illegal immigrants is unconstitutional. The suit says the federal government, and not the states, has the power to regulate immigration.
The government wants an injunction to delay the implementation of the law later in July until the case is resolved.
