NORMAN, OK -- The dean of the honors college at the University of Oklahoma says the aim of the school is to create a very fine liberal arts college within the university's structure.
David Ray, a political science professor, became dean of the Joe C. and Carole Kerr McClendon Honors College last month. He cited an old saying that an education doesn't start in the classroom, it happens in the dining halls and dormitories when really smart kids talk to each other and discuss things.
Ray said that, at the OU honors college, students often lead the most educational conversations in classrooms, in discussion groups, and when they're on their own. Ray says that enables the students to, as he put it, "self-educate" themselves.
