Owasso's Knox-Box Program Designed To Improve Safety During House Fires

OWASSO, OK -- One Green County town has a new program designed to improve safety during a house fire, and help firefighters do their jobs. Thanks to donations, it's all free for senior citizens.

During a fire, getting to people in need quickly is critical.

"The shorter the time frame, the more positive the outcome, in most cases," said Asst. Chief Chris Garrett, Owasso Fire Department.

A little Knox-Box can help. It's like at tiny safe. Homeowners lock a house key inside and firefighters keep a master key in their trucks. So they can get inside quickly during an emergency.

The Knox-Box has been out for quite some time, but Owasso recently started a program that gives them away for free to people over the age of 65. More than a dozen have been given out so far.

"The program is really just taking off," said Garrett.

Donations from civic clubs and private donors make it possible.

"I have fallen twice now," said Father Paul Donovan of Owasso.

Father Donovan was one of the first to get a Knox-Box.

"I think it's a great thing for people like myself who live alone," said Father Donovan.

The boxes have worked well for businesses in Owasso for years. Now it's hoped they will benefit residents, by improving response time to fires and other emergencies, and preventing damage from forced entries.

"It makes our job a lot easier, it's better for the insurance companies, it's better for our patients, for our residents. It's just great," said Garrett.

For Father Donovan, it means peace of mind, and for firefighters, it's about improved safety for the community.

The supply of Knox-Boxes in Owasso is limited, so the fire department is taking donations to get more.
